New customs portal enables public verification of imported vehicles

The Sri Lanka Customs Department has launched a new ‘Vehicle Verification Portal’ as part of the government’s National Tax Week campaign to raise public awareness about taxation.

Additional Director General of Customs, Seevali Arukgoda, encouraged the public to use the portal to verify the legal authenticity of imported vehicles before making purchases.

To use the portal, individuals must enter their phone number, NIC or passport number, and the vehicle’s chassis number. After submitting the information, an SMS will be sent confirming the vehicle’s legal status.

However, vehicles imported before 2005 cannot be verified through this system.

Arukgoda emphasized that this initiative allows users to conveniently check a vehicle’s import status from their mobile devices at home.

He explained, “This platform helps buyers confirm if a vehicle was legally imported, assembled locally from parts, or if it has fraudulent number plates, ensuring the legality and authenticity of purchases.”

The Vehicle Verification Portal is now available to the public as part of wider efforts to enhance transparency and accountability in vehicle imports and transactions.
