New COVID-19 subvariants found in SL: Health officials urge caution, not panic

The Medical Research Institute (MRI) of Sri Lanka has confirmed the detection of two new Omicron subvariants—LF.7 and XFG—currently circulating in parts of Asia.

Dr. Jude Jayamaha, a virology specialist at the Ministry of Health, stated that these variants were identified through genetic testing of samples from several hospitals across the country.

He assured the public that there is no cause for undue concern, as such mutations in the Covid-19 virus are expected.

The health sector remains vigilant, with ongoing monitoring and research to track viral developments.

Authorities have emphasized the continued importance of basic preventive measures to protect high-risk groups, including pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions.

Wearing face masks and avoiding crowded places remain key recommendations.

In a separate case, a one-and-a-half-month-old infant who died at the Galle National Hospital was confirmed to have been infected with the Covid-19 virus.

The infection in the infant was confirmed following tests conducted by the Colombo MRI.

However, the virus strain in this case was not identified as one of the newly detected subvariants.

Health officials continue to urge the public to stay cautious and informed, but not to panic.
