The National Zoological Department is preparing to welcome several new animals to the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens through an international animal exchange programme, according to Director General Chandana Rajapaksa.
Speaking to the media, he announced that the zoo will soon receive three zebras, two pairs of giraffes, three anacondas from France, Mandarin ducks, and two giant turtles as part of the exchange.
In return, the department has sent two pairs of toque macaques, a pair of giant squirrels, a pair of hippopotamuses, a pair of fishing cats, a Green Pit Viper, and a Russell’s Viper to partner countries.
This initiative is aimed at increasing species diversity at the Dehiwala Zoo and promoting conservation and breeding efforts for endangered and vulnerable species.
