“Nelum Kuluna” makes history as SL’s first multi-language remake

Sri Lankan film Tentigo (Nelum Kuluna) has made history as the first Sri Lankan movie to be remade in multiple languages.

The critically acclaimed 2023 Sinhala-language comedy-drama, directed by Ilango Ram, has already been officially remade in Tamil as Perusu and Telugu as Pedha.

In addition, Kannada and Malayalam dubbed versions have been completed in collaboration with South Indian production house Stone Bench Films. The original Sinhala film and its Tamil remake are currently playing in theaters.

A Hindi remake is in development with a renowned North Indian studio, while European adaptations in Spanish, Italian, French, and Belgian languages are also underway. A U.S. remake, backed by a well-known Korean company, is also in progress.

Tentigo has gained international recognition, winning the Special Jury Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and representing Sri Lanka at major global festivals such as the São Paulo International Film Festival (Brazil), AFRIFF African Film Festival (Nigeria), Glasgow Film Festival (UK), Fribourg International Film Festival (Switzerland), and Eikhoigi International Film Festival (India).

With Ilango Ram directing both the original and its first remake, Tentigo has set a new milestone for Sri Lankan cinema, proving its potential to reach global audiences through multiple adaptations.
