Nearly 100,000 schoolchildren affected by severe weather conditions

Nearly a thousand schools across nine provinces have been affected by the adverse weather conditions, according to Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewe.

He noted that around 100,000 schoolchildren have also been impacted by the disaster in various ways.

However, he said that schools in areas not severely affected will reopen on 16th of December . “We expect to issue an official announcement yesterday (08th) or Tuesday (09) regarding which areas and which schools will be reopened,” Kaluwewe stated. He further added that once schools reopen, arrangements have been made to conduct the postponed A/L examination papers in January 2026.
