The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has launched an investigation into the tragic suicide of a schoolgirl in Kotahena, amid allegations of sexual abuse involving a teacher.
The probe is being carried out jointly with the Police Children and Women Bureau, following serious concerns raised by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs.
Although the NCPA initially had no formal complaint, the girl’s parents have now been asked to provide a statement.
The accused teacher, who was arrested after a complaint filed on December 8, 2024, was released on bail and is under a travel ban, with court proceedings currently underway.
The NCPA has requested a detailed report from the Ministry of Education regarding disciplinary actions taken against the teacher.
Allegations have emerged that the school failed to act on the initial complaint, forcing the girl to transfer, and that another teacher further disclosed the incident, intensifying the victim’s trauma.
