Navy controls container fire at Colombo port

A fire broke out in a container at the Bandaranaike Quay IV (BQ IV) terminal in Colombo Port on Thursday night.

The Sri Lanka Navy’s firefighting team from the Western Naval Command responded swiftly and successfully contained the blaze.

Smoke was first noticed at 19:45 hours, prompting the Colombo Port Control Office to seek assistance from the Navy.

A specialized firefighting team, trained in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) affairs, was immediately deployed.

Upon opening the container, firefighters discovered that stored cleaning chemicals had caught fire.

The fire was contained with the help of port workers and the port fire brigade by safely removing the affected chemicals.

Thanks to the prompt response and coordinated efforts, the situation was brought under control without injuries or major damage.
