More than 100 service stations across Australia have been raided in a major nationwide operation targeting suspected criminal activity and the alleged sale of illegal tobacco and vapes.

Nearly 300 personnel from 15 federal and state agencies took part in Operation Shorthand, which was conducted across every state and territory except Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

The Australian Border Force said some service stations were allegedly being used to sell illicit tobacco products, as organized crime groups increasingly move away from traditional tobacconists and into convenience stores, milk bars and petrol stations.

During the raids, officers seized imported tobacco products and cash at some locations. Authorities said the illegal tobacco trade is linked to organized crime and may be used to generate funds for further criminal activity.

The operation involved agencies including the Australian Border Force, Australian Federal Police, NSW Police and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission.

Authorities said some of the targeted service stations could be temporarily closed while evidence gathered during the raids is assessed.
