Namal welcomes President’s humanitarian decision on IRIS Bushehr

Namal Rajapaksa, MP of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has welcomed the decision by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to allow the Iranian vessel IRIS Bushehr to enter Sri Lankan waters and dock at Trincomalee Port, while bringing its 208 crew members to Colombo on humanitarian grounds.

Rajapaksa said the move was timely and reflected Sri Lanka’s commitment to fulfilling its humanitarian obligations under international law. He also stressed the importance of maintaining neutrality amid the ongoing global conflict.

In a post on the mobile app X, Rajapaksa stated that Sri Lanka should continue to uphold humanitarian values whenever necessary while ensuring the country remains neutral in international disputes.

He further expressed hope that the government would encourage dialogue among all parties involved in the conflict to safeguard peace and stability in the Gulf region and across the world.

Rajapaksa also emphasized that Sri Lanka should work closely with regional partners, including India, to strengthen maritime safety and security in the Indian Ocean.
