Namal urges government to honor promises and modernize the country

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa stated that the government should fulfill its promises and focus on modernizing the country, rather than pursuing narrow political interests.

He made these remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of a youth conference organized by the SLPP youth wing.

Rajapaksa emphasized that Sri Lanka must strengthen its economy, safeguard its culture and religion, and equip young people to compete effectively in the modern world.

“Modernizing the country does not mean destroying our culture, religion, or traditions. We must move toward modernity while protecting our national identity,” he said.

He also underscored the vital role of youth in shaping the nation’s future, noting that major political and social movements in Sri Lanka and globally have historically been led by young people.

According to him, youth have played a decisive role in key national events, including the fight against terrorism, efforts toward national unity, and recent political struggles.

Rajapaksa pointed out that during times of economic hardship, it is the younger generation that suffers the most.

He criticized successive governments for prioritizing short-term political objectives over long-term national development.

Referring to the Colombo Port City project, Rajapaksa said Sri Lanka must position itself as a competitive regional financial hub.

“The real challenge for Colombo Port City is not local economic zones, but competition from global financial centers such as Singapore, Dubai, and China. We need a clear long-term strategy to compete with them,” he said.

Rajapaksa stressed the need for a national vision spanning the next 20 to 30 years to create opportunities for young people and drive Sri Lanka’s progress.
