SLPP National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa has welcomed the reduction of U.S. tariff rates on Sri Lankan exports to 20%, calling it a positive development for the country’s export sector.

In a post on X, Rajapaksa congratulated the NPP Government for its persistent engagement with U.S. trade representatives to secure the tariff concession.

He noted that the new rate places Sri Lanka on par with regional competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh in terms of market access.

However, Rajapaksa urged the Government to maintain full transparency regarding the trade and security agreements made with the U.S. to achieve the reduction.

He emphasized the need to strike a balance between economic benefits and protecting national interests, particularly sovereignty.

“While it’s crucial to support our exporters and enhance competitiveness, we must also ensure that all international agreements are clear and do not compromise the country’s sovereignty,” he added.
