Namal Rajapaksa warns govt of backlash if public grievances are ignored

SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa yesterday accused the current government of repeating the same mistakes made by the previous administration and warned that ignoring the people’s grievances would bring severe consequences.

Speaking to the media after meeting the Maha Nayaka Thera of the Gatambe Raja Maha Viharaya in Kandy, Rajapaksa alleged that the government is focused on lies, dividing communities, and suppressing dissent instead of resolving pressing public issues.

He pointed out that the previous government collapsed within five years and claimed the present administration is heading down the same path. “There is no issue in chasing us politically, but the government must find solutions to the people’s problems,” he stressed.

Rajapaksa further alleged that the government has betrayed public trust by weakening intelligence services, targeting war heroes, and governing according to the interests of the Tamil diaspora and remnants of LTTE terrorism.

He said the Maha Sangha had pledged to intervene on national issues, as they had done in the past.

Commenting on upcoming party conferences, Rajapaksa noted that while the UNP and SLFP have announced their summits, the SLPP has not been invited. “Even though we are not invited, under the democratic framework of the country, our blessings are always with them,” he added.

Rajapaksa also criticised the government for suppressing trade unions and undermining state institutions, saying that despite coming to power with union support, the administration now refuses dialogue.

Highlighting SLPP’s readiness for future political battles, he said, “We have former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as our party leader, and I am the national organiser. I will prepare the pitch, and we will select the batsman at the right time.”
