Namal Rajapaksa says Jayakody’s resignation came too late

Namal Rajapaksa has strongly criticised the resignation of Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, stating that the move came far too late despite being accepted.

In a statement posted on X, Namal pointed out that Parliament had spent an entire day debating a no-confidence motion against Jayakody, yet all National People’s Power MPs voted against it, effectively rejecting the corruption allegations and continuing to back the Minister.

He alleged that the controversial coal procurement process had already cost the country millions, raising concerns over whether the resignation would do anything to recover the financial losses.

“Ultimately, it is the consumer who bears the burden of this massive scam,” he said, adding that there is still no clarity on how the losses will be recovered.

Namal also held Anura Kumara Dissanayake accountable, accusing him of appointing Jayakody to a key ministry despite previous corruption allegations.

He further claimed that the President continued to protect Jayakody even after investigations were launched, asserting that the Head of State bears direct responsibility for the alleged coal scam and its impact on the public.
