Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa, who has been indicted over the alleged Krrish deal, raised concerns in court today regarding the prosecution’s failure to provide several key documents requested by the defence to ensure a fair trial.
Appearing on behalf of Rajapaksa, President’s Counsel Sampath Mendis told court that crucial documents sought by the defence had not yet been handed over.
Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Perera, representing the Attorney General, responded that several of the requested documents had already been provided and assured that the remaining ones would be handed over after inquiries are made from the CID.
Colombo High Court Judge Nadee Aparna Suwandurugoda directed the Registrar of the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court to submit the original case proceedings related to the matter to the High Court. The case was fixed for a pre-trial conference on December 18.
The Attorney General has filed criminal proceedings before the High Court against Rajapaksa over the alleged misappropriation of Rs. 70 million provided by Indian real estate firm Krrish Lanka Pvt. Ltd. for the development of rugby in Sri Lanka.
The complaint, lodged in 2015 by Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, alleged that the funds granted by the company were misappropriated by the accused without being used for their intended purpose.
