Opposition MP Namal Rajapaksa has urged the government to take swift action to address the ongoing domestic LP gas shortage reported in several parts of the country.
He noted that the shortage has already caused significant hardship to households across multiple regions and called for immediate intervention to stabilise supplies. As a temporary solution, Rajapaksa proposed releasing LP gas stocks from the terminal located in the Hambantota Port economic zone to ease the current constraints.
Rajapaksa stressed that delays and indecision by previous administrations had contributed to similar crises in the past, underscoring the importance of timely policy decisions to prevent further disruption and inconvenience to the public.
Although the Hambantota gas terminal primarily operates as a re-export facility, he suggested that the existing policy be revised under the present circumstances to allow gas to be released to the domestic market until the shortage is resolved.
