Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa stated that a society that fails to respect mothers and women cannot cultivate genuine love and respect for the motherland.
Speaking at the SLPP Women’s Day celebration in Matale on March 8, held to mark International Women’s Day, Rajapaksa highlighted that the country was built on the sacrifices and blessings of mothers and women.
“We love our motherland just as much as we love our mother, wife, and sister. This society has been built on the blessings of mothers and wives. Therefore, we respect our motherland in the same way we respect our mothers,” he said.
He emphasized that women are often the first to face the challenges arising from economic, social, and political crises in the country. Rajapaksa also recalled the sacrifices made by women during the civil war, noting that many mothers endured immense suffering when their children were sent to the battlefield.
He added that when former President Mahinda Rajapaksa ended the war, it allowed thousands of young people to live without fear, acknowledging that the mothers and daughters of the country made significant sacrifices for that freedom.
Rajapaksa further pointed out that during times of economic hardship, mothers and wives often bear the greatest burden in managing household expenses, particularly amid rising living costs. He stressed that women play a vital role in society and urged all political parties and governments to pay greater attention to their challenges and contributions.
