Health and Mass Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that certain legal proceedings can unfold in ways that allow anyone to make predictions about their outcomes.
He made the remarks in response to questions from journalists regarding an announcement on the Sudaththa Thilakasiri YouTube channel before the court’s decision in the case involving former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
“The government has not interfered in this legal process in any way. In this case, as in all matters including financial fraud and corruption, space has been provided for independent investigations. The government’s responsibility is only to facilitate the necessary support for these institutions,” Jayatissa said.
He emphasized that this situation demonstrates that the law applies equally to all individuals, regardless of their position in society.
Recalling a previous instance, he noted, “Earlier, Victor Ivan also reported a court judgment in advance. Depending on how certain cases proceed, anyone can make predictions. Some may believe bail will be granted, while others may think it won’t. These are merely speculations—sometimes correct, sometimes wrong. Accusations based on such predictions can amount to contempt of court.”
