Mystery as bundle of cash washes up in surf

Police have launched an investigation after a mysterious bundle of cash was found washed up on Kendalls Beach in Kiama, on the south coast of New South Wales.

Locals were shocked to discover a bag of cash and $100 banknotes floating in the water around 1:20 pm on March 20. Witnesses reported an unusual number of swimmers searching for the money. One beachgoer, Ian, retrieved a wad of $100 bills worth around $1,000 from the surf, telling his friend, “They’re swimming for money.”

Regular beachgoer Anna Tydd reported the find to authorities. NSW Police confirmed they responded to the call and spoke to a woman at the scene. Officers have since launched an investigation to determine the source of the money, including whether it is linked to criminal activity.

Under NSW law, keeping found money without attempting to locate the owner may be considered theft or larceny. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Lake Illawarra Police Station or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
