Muslims in Sri Lanka are celebrating the Hajj festival today, also known as Eid al-Adha, one of the most important religious festivals in Islam.
The festival honours the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.
Eid al-Adha is observed by Muslims worldwide and coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia.
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is a mandatory religious duty for all Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.
