Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka’s legendary spin bowler and the world’s highest wicket-taker, has expressed confidence in the home side’s chances in the upcoming Test series against top-ranked Australia.
Despite the series being a dead rubber, with the World Test Championship finalists already decided, Sri Lanka is determined to reclaim the Warne-Murali Trophy, which they lost in 2019.
Muralitharan, who will be present in Galle for the final two days of the series, believes that Sri Lanka’s recent improvement gives them a strong chance.
He credits the leadership of Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s new Head Coach, for addressing key issues within the team and fostering a consistent winning mentality.
Muralitharan highlighted that even in their losses, the team has shown resilience, marking significant progress.
The spin-friendly Galle pitch, familiar to the Sri Lankan team, is seen as a major advantage.
Muralitharan noted that the spin-friendly conditions could play into Sri Lanka’s strengths, though he expressed concern about the toss potentially deciding the match if the pitch starts turning early.
He remains hopeful that Sri Lanka’s skills will guide them to success, making the series an exciting contest.
