Multi-storey parking complexes to be introduced in Colombo to ease traffic congestion

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has opened tenders for 20 new temporary parking lots in and around Colombo to ease traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility.

The move follows challenges encountered in earlier efforts to allocate land for parking, prompting the UDA to adopt a more transparent and structured tender process.

Several of the proposed parking lots are already in operation, while others have recently been established to accommodate the growing number of vehicles.

The UDA expects these new parking spaces to significantly reduce congestion in central Colombo and its key access routes.

As a long-term solution, the government plans to construct multi-storey parking complexes within the city to further address chronic traffic problems.

Currently, Colombo sees an influx of over 400,000 vehicles daily, with nearly 80% being private vehicles, underscoring the urgent need for expanded parking infrastructure.
