Opposition MP D.V. Chanaka has raised concerns over what he described as a possible cyberattack affecting remittances sent by Sri Lankan workers in Israel through a state-owned bank.

He claimed that a large number of Sri Lankan workers in Israel have been unable to access money remitted during April and May, with the funds allegedly remaining blocked in the system.

Chanaka said these workers, who continue to work under difficult and sometimes risky conditions, send an average of around US$3,000 per month back to Sri Lanka.

He further stated that workers were instructed to use Global Remit Ltd. through a leading state bank to transfer their earnings, but alleged that the funds have not reached the intended recipients.

According to him, when affected individuals inquire with the bank, they are directed to the embassy, while the embassy in turn refers them back to the bank, leaving the issue unresolved.

Chanaka also suggested the possibility of a cyber-related disruption, noting that it is still unclear whether the issue originated from a cyberattack targeting the government, the bank, or another entity.
