Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP D.V. Chanaka told Parliament today that vehicle permits for Members of Parliament were stopped in 2020 under the government of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
He said the current government is boasting about halting the issuance of vehicle permits to MPs, but that decision had already been made five years ago.
“The Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration decided to stop issuing permits to MPs in 2020, and since then, no parliamentarian has received one,” he said, adding that only professionals such as doctors and engineers were granted permits.
Chanaka also questioned whether NPP leaders Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Harini Amarasuriya, and Vijitha Herath received vehicle permits in 2020, stating that the government has “nothing new to claim credit for” regarding the policy.
