The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that another group of Sri Lankans is being forcibly employed in cybercrime operations in Myanmar.

According to reports, the individuals traveled on tourist visas seeking jobs but were instead coerced into participating in illegal cyber activities.

The area where they are held, located near the Thai–Myanmar border about 25 kilometres from Myawaddy, is labeled on Google Maps as a “Cyber Criminal Area” and is controlled by an armed group.

Authorities noted that previously, several Sri Lankans forced into similar operations in the same region were successfully rescued after extensive efforts.

Officials warned that young Sri Lankans, particularly those seeking employment in the IT sector, are being lured abroad with false job offers and trafficked into cybercrime networks while on tourist visas.
