Modi unveils ‘Mahasagar Vision’ for global south

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking from Mauritius on Wednesday (12th), introduced a comprehensive vision for security and growth for the Global South, amid China’s increasing influence in the region.

Modi made the announcement after witnessing the signing of several key agreements between India and Mauritius alongside Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in the island nation’s capital.

The two nations signed eight agreements covering cooperation in maritime security, trade in national currencies, and capacity building, among other areas.

In his media statement, Modi introduced India’s new vision for the Global South, called MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), aimed at fostering growth and security.

“Our vision for the Global South will be MAHASAGAR—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions,” he said on the second and final day of his visit. “It focuses on trade for development, capacity building for sustainable growth, and mutual security for a shared future.”

Modi emphasized Mauritius as a key partner for India and recalled that India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision was first introduced in Mauritius a decade ago.
