A woman in India, Sonam Raghuvanshi, has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
The couple, who married on 11 May in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, had travelled to the scenic northeastern state for their honeymoon but went missing just four days into the trip.
Raja’s decomposed body was later discovered in a gorge with his throat slit, and his wife Sonam had vanished without a trace, prompting concerns that she had been abducted or killed.
Following a nationwide outcry and intense media coverage, Sonam surrendered at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and was subsequently arrested.
Meghalaya police revealed that Sonam allegedly hired four men from her home state to carry out the murder. All four suspects have now been apprehended.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem described Sonam as the main suspect in the case but said the motive was still under investigation. He also hinted at a possible extramarital affair with one of the accused.
Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, defended his daughter’s innocence and claimed she had escaped from her captors before surrendering, alleging that Meghalaya police were fabricating evidence.
Meanwhile, Raja’s family, who had initially accused the police of inaction, expressed shock and disappointment, with his brother acknowledging that one of the suspects had worked with Sonam.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma praised the police for solving the case within a week, stating that “the truth has come out” despite earlier criticism directed at law enforcement.
