Minor flood warning ussued for eight areas

Due to rainfall recorded since last night in several catchment areas of the Mahaweli River, there is a possibility of flooding in low-lying areas along the river over the next 48 hours.

The areas at risk fall within the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Kinniya, Muttur, Kantale, Seruvila, Welikanda, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa and Dimbulagala.

There is also a risk of inundation along the Batticaloa–Polonnaruwa Road in the Gallella area, the access road to the Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara, and surrounding areas of the temple. Accordingly, devotees planning to travel to the Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara are kindly requested to avoid visiting the area until further notice over the next few days.

Members of the public living in close proximity to the Mahaweli River in the affected areas are urged to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from possible flood conditions. Relevant disaster management authorities are requested to take appropriate action in this regard.
