The Department of Irrigation has issued a warning that there is a risk of minor flooding in several areas within the Kelani River Basin over the next 48 hours.

The alert follows heavy rainfall of nearly 300 mm recorded in the catchment areas of the Kelani River Basin, along with rising water levels observed at hydrological gauging stations monitored by the department.

Based on current assessments, minor flood conditions may develop in low-lying areas of the Kelani River Valley within the next two days.

The potentially affected regions include areas downstream of Hanwella, covering the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Seethawaka, Dompe, Padukka, Homagama, Biyagama, Kaduwela, Kolonnawa, Kelaniya, Wattala, and Colombo.

Residents in these areas, as well as motorists travelling through them, have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

The Disaster Management authorities have also been requested to take appropriate precautionary measures in response to the evolving situation.
