The Ministry of Children and Women’s Affairs has expressed deep concern over the sharp rise in drug addiction among women in Colombo and surrounding areas.
Minister Saroja Savitri Paulraj revealed that recent data shows a troubling increase in substance abuse, particularly among girls and young women. Reports from the Police, Drug Prevention Units, and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board indicate a surge in the use of ice (methamphetamine), pills, alcohol, and cigarettes among female users.
The Minister further cautioned that drug use among pregnant women could severely impact the intellectual and physical development of their children. She added that the Ministry has initiated the formulation of a special programme to combat this issue by providing targeted support, treatment, and rehabilitation for affected women.
