Ministry launches affordable crop insurance scheme to support farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation has launched a concessionary insurance scheme for key field crops to strengthen agricultural risk management.

The scheme provides coverage for crops including black gram, green gram, cowpea, peanuts, finger millet (kurakkan), sesame, and horse gram (kollu), the Ministry announced.

Under the initiative, farmers cultivating cowpea can insure one acre by paying Rs. 4,200, and in the event of natural disasters, pest or disease damage, or destruction caused by wild elephants, they will be entitled to compensation of Rs. 60,000 per acre.

Similarly, green gram cultivators can insure one acre for Rs. 5,600 and claim up to Rs. 80,000 per acre in the case of damages, according to the Ministry.

The special scheme is designed particularly for districts prone to wild elephant threats, ensuring farmers are compensated for losses caused by such risks.

The Ministry emphasized that the program aims to provide financial protection and stability to the farming community while encouraging sustained agricultural productivity.
