Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe is set to attend Sri Lanka’s Trade Policy Review (TPR) at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the 16th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XVI).
These high-level meetings will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 15 to 23, with the Minister leading a Sri Lankan delegation.
This will be the first Trade Policy Review since the new government took office. The review is part of the WTO’s regular process to assess the transparency and effectiveness of member countries’ trade policies. During the sessions, member nations will evaluate Sri Lanka’s trade policy framework, progress, and reforms.
Minister Samarasinghe is expected to chair discussions on Sri Lanka’s trade developments and economic outlook with other WTO member states.
The Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development emphasized the importance of this review, noting that it comes at a crucial time as Sri Lanka focuses on economic recovery and export-led growth. The review provides a key opportunity to showcase the nation’s economic achievements, policy reforms, and strategic plans for the future.
While in Geneva, Minister Samarasinghe will also take part in the Ministerial Conference of UNCTAD XVI — the organization’s highest decision-making body, which brings together all UN member states every four years.
This year’s conference will be held under the theme “Shaping the Future: Driving Economic Transformation for Equitable, Inclusive, and Sustainable Development.”
