Minister vows stern action against harmful plastic baby products

Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe announced today that stern action will be taken within the next two months against importers and manufacturers of harmful plastic baby items, including feeding bottles, lunch boxes, water bottles, and toys.

Speaking to the media, the Minister revealed that testing and research have shown the presence of low-quality and potentially harmful plastic products for babies in the local market.

To address this issue, an expert committee comprising officials from the Ministries of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, Education, and Industries will be appointed. The committee will be tasked with formulating appropriate measures to regulate or eliminate the use of such harmful plastic items.
