Transport and Highways Minister Bimal Rathnayake has urged the IGP to ensure maximum security when transporting high-profile criminal suspects through airports.

He emphasized the importance of using special routes to avoid public disruption and reduce potential security threats.
Speaking at a media briefing, the Minister criticized the practice of escorting suspects through public passenger areas while covering their faces, calling it inappropriate and unsettling for travelers.
He warned that rival criminal groups could attempt to attack suspects or destroy evidence at the airport, posing a serious risk to public safety and the facility’s reputation.
The Minister pointed out that the presence of suspected underworld figures among regular passengers can alarm both locals and foreign tourists.
He stated that leading suspects through public terminals, especially with their faces covered, creates fear and damages the airport’s image.
Rathnayake stressed that such exposure could also endanger the suspects themselves.
He requested the IGP to work closely with airport authorities to escort such individuals through secure, designated routes to protect both suspects and the general public.
