

Minister of Transport and Highways Bimal Rathnayake says Sri Lanka spent more than Rs. 5.18 billion on maintaining its expressway network covering 312.57 kilometres.

Addressing Parliament today, the Minister revealed that the Southern Expressway recorded the highest maintenance cost at Rs. 2.02 billion for the stretch from Kottawa to Mattala.
The Outer Circular Expressway required Rs. 767.6 million for maintenance, while the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway cost Rs. 834.1 million.
Maintenance expenditure for the Central Expressway from Mirigama to Kurunegala–Yaggapitiya stood at Rs. 531 million, while the Southern Expressway Extension from Andarawewa to Hambantota cost Rs. 1.02 billion.
Minister Rathnayake also disclosed that total revenue generated from Sri Lanka’s expressways between January and December 2025 amounted to Rs. 16.33 billion.
The Southern Expressway generated the highest income at Rs. 5.03 billion, followed by the Outer Circular Expressway with Rs. 4.34 billion and the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway with Rs. 3.35 billion.
The Southern Expressway Extension earned Rs. 2.01 billion, while the Central Expressway generated Rs. 1.57 billion in revenue during the period.
The Minister made these remarks in response to a question raised in Parliament by Opposition MP Ravi Karunanayake.
