Minister, contaminated hydrated lime not sent to water plants

Minister of Urban Development Anura Karunathilake assured Parliament that imported hydrated lime containing high levels of chromium has not been distributed to any water purification plants in the country.

He emphasized that there is no risk to public health regarding tap water safety.

The assurance was given in response to an allegation raised by MP D.V. Chanaka on Thursday.

The Minister clarified that the contaminated lime has not been used in water treatment processes.

He urged the public to remain confident about the safety of drinking tap water.

Authorities are reportedly monitoring the situation to ensure continued water quality.
