Investigations have revealed that Zahran Hashim, who led the suicide attacks on Easter Sunday in 2019, was controlled by a “supreme leader,” Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala told Parliament yesterday.
Speaking during the debate on the Easter Sunday attacks, the Minister said some of the findings are highly sensitive, particularly due to ongoing court cases.
He stated that investigations are progressing in the right direction, noting that Zahran and his group were responsible for the killing of two policemen in Vavunathivu. The Minister added that the Easter Sunday attacks could have been prevented if proper investigations had been carried out earlier and Zahran had been arrested in time.
Minister Wijepala further revealed that the two firearms belonging to the slain policemen have now been recovered—one from Wanathawilluwa and the other from Nintavur.
He also noted that international agencies, including Scotland Yard, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Interpol, have been involved in the ongoing investigations.
