Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake has announced plans to expand domestic flights to promote local tourism.
Speaking during an inspection tour of Jaffna International Airport in Palaly, he stated that necessary legal amendments would be made to facilitate this expansion.
“A preliminary decision has been made, especially for domestic tourists. Currently, Jaffna residents travel to Katunayake to fly overseas,” Rathnayake said.
He emphasized plans to increase domestic flights between Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake and Jaffna International Airport while further developing the latter.
To achieve this, the government aims to amend existing laws governing domestic aviation.
“The laws should be adapted to suit domestic flights. If that happens, private aircraft owners and companies in Sri Lanka will be able to operate flights, benefiting both the industry and the people,” he added.
