Industries Minister Sunil Handunnetti made a bizarre remark yesterday, claiming Sri Lanka had “won the Nobel Prize for tea” after entering the Guinness World Records for producing the world’s most expensive tea.
Speaking to the media, Handunnetti hailed it as a proud moment that highlighted the unmatched quality of Ceylon Tea and reinforced its status in the global luxury market, although he appeared unaware of what a Nobel Prize actually signifies.
Sri Lanka recently secured a Guinness World Record through the New Vithanakande Tea Factory, which produced the world’s most expensive Ceylon Black Tea (FFExSp). The premium tea was sold in Japan at LKR 252,500 per kilogram (around ¥125,000).
