Millions of Australians will receive a cash boost this week as Centrelink payments increase under indexation changes, providing relief amid the rising cost of living. These adjustments occur twice a year, in March and September, to ensure payments keep pace with inflation.
Which Centrelink payments are increasing?
Several payments will rise this week, including the Age Pension, Carer Payment, and Disability Support Pension. Federal Rent Assistance, Youth Allowance, and JobSeeker payments will also increase to match inflation. Additionally, income limits for some payments will rise, allowing more Australians to qualify.
When do the new rates start?
The updated rates will take effect from Friday, September 20, and recipients will see the increased amounts in their accounts from that date.
How much are payments increasing?
Age Pension: Single recipients will get an extra $29.70, raising fortnightly payments from $1,149.00 to $1,178.70. Couples will receive $22.40 each, bringing payments to $888.50 per person.
Single parents: Increase of $16.20 (total $1,039.70); partnered parents: $11.40 (total $734.40).
Rental Assistance: Singles up by $3.40 (total $215.40); couples by $3.20 (total $203.00); families by up to $4.48.
JobSeeker: Singles over 22 with no children gain $12.50 (total $793.60); couples get $11.40 each.
Youth Allowance: Increase of $16.20, from $1,011.50 to $1,027.70 per fortnight.
Do recipients need to apply?
No action is required. The new rates will be automatically applied to payments from September 20 onwards.
Why are Centrelink payments indexed twice a year?
Payments are adjusted biannually to keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of living. These changes are based on the Consumer Price Index, weekly wage changes, and the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index. The next update is scheduled for March 2026.
