Millions of Australians face rising health insurance premiums, authorities warn

For the first time in five years, the 15 million Australians with private health insurance are expected to face a significant rise in their annual premiums.

Private health insurers will submit their proposed premium changes to Federal Health Minister Mark Butler on Wednesday for review. Analysis by Money.com.au indicates that next year’s increase will break a five-year trend of restrained rises, aligning more closely with health inflation.

Rising private hospital costs and wage increases are anticipated to drive up premiums. Chris Whitelaw, general manager of health insurance at Money.com.au, noted that since 2021, following the pandemic, premium increases have been restrained, but that period of suppression is coming to an end. “Their pricing buffer is running out, and the private health sector is likely to recalibrate after several years of suppressed pricing. We expect 2026 could mark the first year in half a decade where premiums and health inflation move in tandem,” he said.

Minister Butler stated that he expects health funds to act in good faith, acknowledging that insurers are facing rising costs and challenges in the private hospital sector. Health insurance premiums increased by an average of 3.73 per cent this year, following two earlier proposals of 5 to 6 per cent that Butler rejected.

Ahead of Wednesday’s submissions, Butler emphasized that private health funds should make “more strenuous efforts” to provide value to customers while supporting struggling private hospitals. His final decision, expected between December and late January, will determine the level of premium increases when new rates take effect next April.
