

Remittances sent by migrant workers to Sri Lanka have recorded a significant increase of 26.5% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

Quoting data from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the SLBFE stated that the country received a total of USD 2.294 billion in remittances between January and March 2026.
Monthly inflows were reported at USD 751 million in January, USD 729 million in February, and USD 815 million in March, reflecting a steady upward trend.
In comparison, remittances for the same period in 2025 amounted to USD 1.815 billion, highlighting a notable year-on-year growth.
Meanwhile, 62,145 Sri Lankans have departed for overseas employment during the first three months of this year, further contributing to the rise in foreign remittance inflows.
