The Mexican government has not ruled out filing a civil lawsuit against Google if the company continues labeling the stretch of sea between northeastern Mexico and the southeastern United States as the “Gulf of America,” President Claudia Sheinbaum stated.
The body of water, globally recognized as the Gulf of Mexico, has drawn geopolitical attention after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to rename it.
Sheinbaum clarified in a Thursday news conference that Trump’s decree only applies to the U.S. continental shelf, as Mexico still controls much of the Gulf.
“We have sovereignty over our continental shelf,” she asserted. Despite Mexico formally notifying Google that the name change is incorrect, the company has refused to revise it.
It remains unclear where Mexico would file a lawsuit.
Google previously stated on its X account that it follows a long-standing practice of updating names based on official government sources.
