Nineteen people were injured, with four in serious condition, after a Mexican Navy training ship collided with New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge.
The tall sailing ship, Cuauhtémoc, clipped the bridge’s underside with its towering masts while passing under it on Saturday evening.
Footage shows the ship’s masts striking the bridge, causing parts to fall onto the deck.
Several injuries reportedly occurred as crew members were positioned on the masts during the collision.
New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) confirmed it was responding to the incident, though details remain limited.
Mayor Eric Adams stated that the Brooklyn Bridge did not sustain any structural damage.
The Mexican Navy confirmed the vessel was damaged and announced an investigation into the incident.
Onlookers near the water’s edge fled as the ship collided with the bridge.
New York City’s Fire Department confirmed emergency services were treating the injured but had not specified how many were on the ship or the bridge.
NYCEM posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the situation is developing and details are unconfirmed.
Mayor Eric Adams visited the scene and received a briefing on the situation, according to CBS.
The NYPD advised residents to avoid the areas around the Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport, and Dumbo due to emergency response activity.
Authorities warned of heavy traffic and a significant presence of emergency vehicles in the vicinity.
The Cuauhtémoc, carrying over 200 crew members, was in New York on a goodwill mission.
