Mental health crisis in Australian Immigration detention centers

Reports indicate a worsening mental health crisis among illegal migrants in Australian immigration detention facilities, with some individuals attempting suicide.

The Australian Department of Home Affairs revealed that from 2019 to 2024, approximately 2,670 incidents involving detainees were recorded in these centers. Alarming data shows that at least one self-harm incident is reported daily in facilities housing more than 1,000 detainees.

The financial burden on the Australian government is significant, with detention operations costing an estimated $428,542 per detainee annually.

Performance data from Australian Statistics Australia highlights a steady decline in the mental well-being of detained migrants, raising concerns about the adequacy of mental health support in these facilities.

Calls for reform and improved care for detainees continue as the nation grapples with the challenges of managing immigration and detention policies.
