Melburnians warned of major disruptions as police prepare for protest clashes

Melburnians are being warned to expect significant delays and disruptions in the CBD this Sunday, as police prepare for the possibility of clashes between two major protest groups.

Around 2,000 people are expected to gather in the city for an anti–mass immigration protest and an anti–far-right extremism counter-rally, both scheduled on the same day. The demonstrations coincide with the opening of the Metro Tunnel, with large crowds expected to take advantage of free weekend public transport across Victoria from November 30 until 1st of February 2026.

Families are also anticipated to visit the city for Black Friday shopping and the popular Myer Christmas windows, adding to the congestion.

Police have urged the public to prepare for substantial disruptions.
“Be mindful that there will be a lot of traffic and some level of disruption in the city,” Superintendent Troy Papworth said.

Authorities are keen to avoid a repeat of the violent scenes witnessed during a similar protest and counter-protest on October 19, when rocks, glass bottles, and rotten fruit were thrown at officers. Two men, aged 21 and 54, have since been charged with assaulting police during those clashes, while investigators continue to search for 19 more suspects.

Papworth warned that police will not tolerate violence, expressing concerns that extremists may attempt to hijack the rallies.
“If you come into the city and act violently, you will be caught — and you may find yourself spending time in a police cell,” he said.

Starting Sunday, police will have enhanced powers to stop and search people without a warrant, direct individuals to leave the area, and order protesters to remove face coverings, despite the legislation not coming into force until next year.
