Melbourne’s population growth reaches record highs

Melbourne’s population has surged from 3.5 million in 2001 to 5.2 million today, with the West Melbourne region now identified as the most densely populated area.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that, between 2001 and 2023, the western part of Melbourne has seen the greatest population growth.

Meanwhile, the eastern and southeastern areas are also experiencing increased population density.

Peter Dawkins, Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University, commented on the rapid expansion, saying, “People still don’t realize how big this region is and how fast it’s growing.”

Looking ahead, Melbourne’s population growth is expected to accelerate, with 800,000 new homes planned for construction across Victoria in the next decade.

In particular, the number of homes in Melton is projected to increase by 190%, Maribyrnong by 114%, and Wyndham by 110%.
