The Victorian Government has confirmed there are no plans to replace Melbourne’s Australia Day parade, which was scrapped four years ago.
The Australia Day 2025 program will not include the parade but will feature events like the 21-Gun Salute at the Shrine of Remembrance and an RAAF flyover.
Additional activities include a flag hoisting ceremony and an open day at Government House.
A spokesperson from the Victorian Department of Premier’s and Cabinet emphasized the program’s focus on celebrating the unique qualities of the state and nation.
The 2025 events are designed to be free and accessible for Victorian families.
The Prime Minister’s Department acknowledged that January 26 holds different meanings for Australians and encouraged reflection and dialogue on the day.
Ngarra Murray, Co-chair of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, supported the decision not to reinstate the Melbourne parade.
