Melbourne water levels drop, fee hike likely

Water levels in Melbourne’s reservoirs have dropped to their lowest point in three years, prompting the activation of the city’s desalination plant for the first time since 2021.

This water shortage has impacted both metropolitan Melbourne and regional areas equally, raising concerns about long-term supply.

Currently, Melbourne’s water storage is at 78 percent capacity, while in Geelong, levels have fallen even lower to 42 percent.

Due to the high cost of running the desalination plant, residents in Melbourne are expected to face an increase in water bills, with an estimated $12 hike next year.
