Melbourne has recorded its warmest June night on record, with overnight temperatures reaching levels more commonly associated with summer rather than the middle of winter.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius, making the 24-hour period the warmest June night ever recorded in Melbourne.

Senior Meteorologist David Crock said the unusually warm conditions were similar to a typical summer night, with much of Melbourne experiencing record-breaking warmth at the beginning of winter.

The warm spell followed several days of above-average temperatures, including a minimum of 14.7 degrees recorded early Tuesday morning and a low of 11.1 degrees on Monday night.

However, the brief taste of summer is coming to an end, with cooler winter conditions expected to return across Victoria in the coming days.

Meteorologists forecast daytime temperatures to fall to around 14 degrees, with colder nights, stronger winds and increased rainfall expected across the state.

A strong wind warning remains in place for several coastal areas, while showers and possible thunderstorms are forecast as rain systems move across western parts of Victoria.

Weather officials say the cooler conditions will feel more noticeable after the record-breaking warmth, bringing Melbourne back to more typical June weather.
