Melbourne has been named the world’s third-best city for Gen Z to live in, according to Time Out’s 2026 global ranking based on responses from people under 30.
Tokyo claimed the top spot, followed by Porto in Portugal, while Melbourne secured third place ahead of cities including Edinburgh, Shanghai and New York.
Melbourne scored particularly highly for its food and dining scene, receiving a 100 per cent approval rating from Gen Z respondents. Its cultural scene also performed strongly, with 97 per cent giving positive feedback, while 94 per cent praised their local neighbourhoods.
The city’s vibrant arts and entertainment scene, including live music, theatre, comedy and nightlife, was highlighted as one of its major attractions for younger residents.
Melbourne also offers extensive green spaces, public transport and a strong student community, although the ranking acknowledged challenges including housing costs and the broader cost of living.
The result places Melbourne ahead of other Australian cities and highlights its growing appeal among young people seeking culture, entertainment, community and lifestyle opportunities.
